News Analyzer

Introduction

Reading of the news gives us a lot of information.  But only a small part of this information may appear to be really useful and there is the risk that it will be lost among all other information. News Analyzer is developed to easilyl find required information according to the given criteria.  It allows us to search for the news according to the given key words. Thus key words are incorporated into the key phrases in order to make the selection more precise and key phrases in turn are incorporated into the groups with treelike structure. And as a result we have carefully selected news that are moreover divided into categories and it gives us additional information. Speaking briefly, News Analyzer is the program that helps to find the news and groups the result of the search.

The program is delivered with the examples of its use in different fields (medicine, IT, culture).

"Key phrase", "key group" and "key news" concepts.

The main unit for the news search is the key phrase. This is the set of the key words according to which the search will be made. Each key phrase may consist of one or few key words. During the search the consecutive comparison of the text of  each news is made in order to find one of the key words and thus the connection is established between the news and the key phrase. The news, for which such connection is established is called the key news. Key phrases are incorporated into the key groups. These groups are organized hierarchically, i.e. key group may contain not only the key phrases but also the subgroups. Thus we have the categorized results of the search with consecutive narrowing from the general to the particular.

Groups Management

Add a group

In order to add a key group choose "Add Key Group" icon on the News Analyzer toolbar or right mouse сlick on the key groups tree to call pop-up menu and choose "Add Key Group" menu item. New group will appear in the tree with default name "New Group" and it will be suggested to enter its name. After specifying the name, press "Enter" key. Now we have new key group. 

Change the name of the group.

To change the name of the key group choose "Edit Key Group" icon of the News Analyzer toolbar, or right mouse сlick on the key groups tree to call pop-up menu and choose "Edit Key Group" menu item, or press "F2" key. The name of the chosen key group will be switched to the edit mode and you will be able to change it. Press "Enter" to exit the edit mode.

Delete a group

To delete a key group choose "Delete Key Group" icon of the News Analyzer toolbar or right mouse сlick on the key groups tree to call pop-up menu and choose "Delete Key Group" menu item. You will have to confirm that you would like to delete the key group together with its subgroups and key phrases.

Add a subgroup

To add a key subgroup choose "Add Key SubGroup" icon of the News Analyzer toolbar or right mouse сlick on the key groups tree to call pop-up menu and choose "Add Key SubGroup" menu item. New group that is one level lower than the current one, will appear in the tree with default name "New Group" and it will be suggested to enter its name. After specifying the name press "Enter" key. Now we have new key subgroup.

Key Phrases management

Add a phrase

In order to add new key phrase  choose "New Key Phrase" icon on the News Analyzer toolbar or right mouse сlick on key phrases list to call pop-up menu and choose "New Key Phrase" menu item. The following form will appear:               

Type in the name of the key phrase, press "Add" button and then press "Ok". New key phrase will be added to the list. 

Edit the key phrase

In order to edit any key phrase from the list point out the phrase you would like to edit and choose "Edit Selected Key Phrase" icon on the News Analyzer toolbar or right mouse сlick on key phrase you would like to edit and choose "Edit Key Phrase" menu item. The following form will appear:

Edit the key phrase, press "Add" button and press Ok. The selected phrase will be edited.

Delete a phrase

In order to delete key phrase from the list point out the phrase you would like to delete and choose "Delete Selected Key Phrase" icon on the News Analyzer toolbar or right mouse сlick on the key phrase you would like to delete and choose "Delete Key Phrase" menu item. Confirmation form will appear. Choose "Yes" to confirm deletion and "No" to cancel it.

Add, edit and delete notes to the key phrases

You can add, edit and delete notes to the key phrases.

Procedure is the same as adding, editing and deleting key phrases (see above). In order to add, edit or delete a note, select a phrase and choose appropriate icons on the toolbar or right mouse click on the notes pane and choose appropriate menu item from the pop-up menu.

News search

You can search news by key phrase, group or subgroup.

Search by key phrase

In order to search news by key phrase right mouse сlick on the phrase  you would like to search news for and choose "Search News for Key Phrase " menu item. 

Or press "Find" button and choose "Find News for Key Phrase" menu item.

Download progress form will appear.

Press "Close" button and you will be able to read the headlines in the reading pane to the right of the groups tree. Click the headline to read full text.

Search by group and by subgroup.

Procedure is the same to search news by group and subgroup. In order to search news by groups and subgroups right mouse сlick on a group or subgroup you would like to search news for and choose "Search News for Key Group" or "Search News for Key Group and Subgroups" menu items. You can also search the news for all key groups by choosing "Search News for All Key Groups" menu item.

Delete news for key phrases, groups and subgroups.

In order to delete news for key phrases, groups and subgroups right mouse click on a phrase, group and subgroup you would like to delete news for and choose appropriate item from the pop-up menu: "Clear News for Key Phrase", "Clear News for Key Group", "Clear News for Key Group and Subgroups", "Clear News for All Key Groups".

Or you can point out a phrase, group and subgroup  you would like to delete news for, press "Clear" button and choose appropriate menu item.

Delete or add key news manually

In order to add the news to the current key phrase you can just drug & drop it to News Analyzer. You can also add the key news , using pop-up menu. Right mouse click on the news in News Navigator and choose "Link News with Search Phrase" menu item. If News Analyzer is opened at this moment you will be suggested to view the subtree of the current key group.

Key news management

After we made the news search for key phrase or group, we may "evaluate" the news. This process is called rating. We may view the graphical representation of news rating for key phrase or group.

Key news rating

To evaluate the news we use the scale that consists of 7 items:

1. Very high positive

2. High positive

3. Positive

4. Zero

5. Negative

6. High negative

7. Very high negative

By default all news are marked as "Zero", so they have neutral character. If the information in the headline is enough to evaluate a new, we may mark it with one of the 7 options listed above. Right mouse click on the rating icon that is located to left of the headline text and pop-up menu will appear. 

If the headline is not enough for estimation, click on the headline  and complete news text  will be downloaded into your browser, where you will be able to read and then evaluate it. In the right top corner of the browser there is the scale that indicates the current value of the news. If you would like to change the value, just move the cursor  to the required point.

Create and view charts for key phrases and groups.

The last step in news analysis is viewing of the rating charts for key phrase or group. Using charts you can make the comparative analysis of different phrases or groups, sorting the results by providers, channels and categories.
